Every day of the week has its own theme over at ‘The NO SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH ART Society’… but not Saturday. Hm, let’s fix that. I’m going to kick things off with an ‘obsessive’ theme, by way of millions of safety pins:
Gasp! Now that is a LOT of safety pins. This is the insanely fabulous wearable artwork of Swedish artist Tonje Halvorsen, and this is her story:
“In the year 2014 I ordered 100,000 safety pins, which I used to create my very first wearable piece of art. Since then my fascination with the safety pins as a material has only grown, and I've been creating with safety pins ever since. I love taking an every day object and show off its beauty by turning it into something completely different. It's a very time consuming process which I've been practicing at my spare time for years. Three years ago I completed my first collection called ‘Obsession’. It was completed in 7000 hours and contained 10 outfits, a half a million safety pins and 1.5 millions sequins and beads. This is something that I really want to dedicate myself to which is why I recently quit my full time job to pursue this dream.”
Love! Watch Tonje’s time-lapse videos on Instagram at @tonje.linnea… they’re jaw-dropping.
… aaaand the obsessive, repetitive, meticulous theme continues with our ‘Society Member in the Spotlight’. These are the ink drawings of California based artist Zo Frampton. So. Much. Detail. Here are a few excerpts from Zo’s artist statement:
“I grew up surrounded by strong creative women who taught me to sew, knit and stitch. The repetitive nature of these traditional practices was something I found relaxing and informed my sense of belonging, which in turn informs my drawings today. I don’t plan my compositions in a traditional way, instead I build it piece by piece … The other primary influence in my drawings is one of inspiration. i am looking to our precious natural world, which is in such obvious crisis and finding my subject matter among the creatures both small like microorganisms and large like schools of fish or river deltas … I pour my panic into ink and try to create something that speaks to the larger issue of conservation.”
Meditative with a message. You can watch Zo in slow, meticulous, totally organic action via Instagram at @zoframpton.
Have a lovely, creative weekend! ~ Danielle
