I’ve followed British artist Sue Williams A’Court for years… and today she’s the ‘member in the spotlight’! Her portfolio is filled with gorgeous compositions and perfect color palettes on all sorts of surfaces. Now, you might be thinking, ‘Ah, found vintage landscapes cut up and collaged’… NOPE:
“… Classical landscape references are reinterpreted in a new context, rendered in graphite on a variety of surfaces. The form, composition and materiality are meticulously constructed to summon a state of mind rather than a specific location.
The tension between the precision drawing and the loosely painted ground references different models of art history and alludes to contrasting types of mental attention competing for the same psychological space… “
Yes, those landscapes are drawings! She DRAWS these gorgeous landscapes in graphite… and then, yes, in some cases she cuts them up and puts them into smaller collages. You can find some of those small collage pieces in Sue’s shop, and she’s on Instagram at @suewilliamsacourt.
Fun Fact: In Thursday’s ART DELIVERY, the ‘extra’ content that follows the featured artist, is a column called DEAR ARTY. Here’s the gist: Subscribers email me a question, I share the question, and then our amazing community does the rest! Within the comments section, they jump in with advice, insights and incredibly thoughtful answers. Whether the concerns revolve around practical topics like pricing, or emotional issues like ‘imposter syndrome’, DEAR ARTY covers it all… it might be my favorite column (don’t tell the other weekdays… I don’t want them to be jealous!)
Have a great weekend ~ Danielle
