Paintings? Sculptures? Yep! This is the work of New York based artist Josh Sperling:
Josh Sperling draws on the language of minimalist painting from the 1960s and 1970s, primarily working with shaped canvases. He crafts intricate plywood supports over which canvas is stretched and painted in a signature palette of saturated, sometimes clashing colors. In their three-dimensionality, his works blur the lines between painting and sculpture, image and object.
Yes they do, and I love ‘em ALL! You can find Josh on Instagram at @joshsperling.
Obviously, I have to use Josh’s fabulous work as our starting place for this week’s creative prompt. Do this any way you like, ie., drawing, painting, collaging, sculpting, photography, etc…
THREE really is the magic number : Choose 3 shapes, 3 colors, and 3 sizes (because every composition looks more balanced with a small, medium and large element). Okay, now make something! Have fun, you can’t do it wrong.
Happy Jumpday ~ Danielle
This prompt reminds me of my students that were so into a "3 color challenge" last year. I assume it was something trending on TikTok or elsewhere on the internet. But, maybe they were onto something. I should've challenged them even more with shapes and sizes too. :)
