Oh, the absolutely jaw-dropping acrylic paintings (and huge murals!?) of LA based artist Calida Rawles. The final image above, titled “Thy Name We Praise” 2023, is part of “Black American Portraits”, a fantastic group exhibition — originally at LACMA — now installed at Spelman College, Calida’s alma mater. The opening reception is happening tomorrow night, Friday February 10th, 5-7pm, at Spelman College Museum of Fine Art in Atlanta, GA. It’s free to the public, but you need to reserve a spot. GO if you can!

From contemporary to historical, the fabulous art shows continue! “Leonor Fini : Théâtres Imaginaires” is on now at Galerie Raphaël Durazzo in Paris:
“Leonor Fini (1907 - 1996) is considered one of the most important women artists of the 20th century. Her fertile imagination and the dreamlike nature of her work have often led to her being labeled a surrealist. Although close to Max Ernst, Leonora Carrington, Salvador Dali, Meret Oppenheim and Dora Maar she always refused to be associated with their manifestos or in anyway aligned with their group. She went entirely her own way. Her talent and unique vision as an artist, her public persona and her exceptional charisma made her a celebrity of post-war Parisian life.”
Ah, c’est bonne! The exhibition runs until March 25th, 2023.
Have a great day ~ Danielle
Calida Rawles work is stunning and even more jaw dropping in person. I saw her paintings at the LACMA exhibit and they gave me goosebumps. The whole "Black American Portraits" exhibit was incredibly moving and so well curated. Thanks for sharing her work again.
