I can hear a faint, ‘whooooosh, swoooooosh’ in my head… just me? Okay, well, these whooshes and swooshes are the work (acrylic on canvas) of today’s ‘member in the spotlight’, American artist Michelle Weddle:
“I prefer to work on large scale square canvases requiring full physical engagement. The back-and-forth brushstrokes, whether fluid and subdued, or energetic with abrupt articulation, allude to sound, influenced by the music I listen to while working. Once the initial layer of paint is laid, I discern which marks most effectively convey the central gesture and conceal the rest behind the subsequent layers of paint, reducing the composition to a few solitary brushstrokes. The surrounding thicker-laid shapes are supporting actors to the focal strokes. Their outlines extend the reach of the central markings, enhancing their dynamism through their outline and etched surfaces.”
Beautifully said, beautifully swooshed! You can follow Michelle’s giant brushstrokes on Instagram at @michelleweddle.
A few newsy/artsy tidbits I want to share on this lovely Saturday…
No.1 : There are only 3 spots left for the week-long workshop I’m doing in Santa Fe (May 6 - 10) so if you want to sign up, do it now because the deadline is Feb 14th ❤️ !? ps. During the workshop, we’re going to have a little field trip for a behind-the-scenes tour at Meow Wolf!? What!? Yep, true story.
No.2 : Next Saturday, Feb 17th at 10am PST/1pm EST, I’ll be doing an IG Live with the European Cultural Academy in Venice to answer all of your questions about the upcoming Contemporary Art Course happening for two weeks in Venice this July!
No.3 : This one isn’t travel related… I curated a show, “Untitled 18”, for Soo Visual Arts Center in Minneapolis, and it opens next Saturday, February 17th, and runs until March 24th. From 275 applicants, I chose 28 wonderful artists to showcase. If you’re in the area, go check it out (and send me pictures because I’m too far away!)
Happy weekend ~ Danielle
Really love these
