I saw that final painting above, titled “Lily’s Studio”, 2023 (acrylic on linen, 77”x92”), when I was at Art Basel Miami in December. I knew instantly that it was the work of LA based painter Hilary Pecis… what I didn’t realize, though, was how BIG so many of her pieces are! Here’s a little bit about her inspiration:
Pecis’ paintings often originate from everyday photographs she takes of her own home as well as other people’s domestic spaces, streetscapes of Los Angeles where she lives, and landscapes of places she has traveled to. For Pecis, the vibrantly colored still lifes, meticulously arranged interiors, and sun-drenched exteriors are “signifiers of who we are and who we want to be,” composing a telling portraiture of the contemporary self. ~ Spurs Gallery
Well I can tell you for certain, I stood in front of this “meticulously arranged interior” for a very, very long time. You can follow Hilary on Instagram at @hilary_pecis.
This is the studio of Georgia based artist Cedric Smith… clearly, it belongs to Lucy and Lola, too! I love this cozy space, filled with great big easels to hold Cedric’s powerful work. But wait… he also has tiny easels so he can head outside to paint in the sweet Georgia sunshine! Sigh. Dreamy.
