You’ll probably recognize these creatures, as I’ve written about this artist’s masks & sculptures so many times over the years… but not quite like this! London based artist Abigail Brown has a new creative partner. Yep, she is “collaborating with fungi to explore what would emerge if mycelium was allowed to colonise [her] sculptures”:
“The thought of mycelium blanketing my animal head sculptures in white and the possibility of mushrooms emerging tied in so many threads of thought: metaphors of wrapping someone in cotton-wool to protect them, of networks, the importance of connection, of communities working together to prosper, of psilocybin’s powers to dissolve the self, to forge new neural pathways, to heal minds and souls. As repurposing materials is central to my work, I loved the idea that the old materials (cardboard) would be the food for new life (fungi) to grow. The sculptures could explore the dualities of life and death, beauty and decay, connection and disconnect in a very real way.”
So beautifully bizarre. Keep an eye on Abigail’s fungi experiments on Instagram at @abigailbrownart.
Yep, our artsy society will be ONE on Tuesday! Whoa, that was fast… must be due to all of the art! So many fabulous artists, exhibitions, films, studios ‘n residencies, jump-starter prompts, sold out member badges, our very own library, and — weirdly — a lot of cake, aka “art you can eat”. Thank you so, so much for being part of this new adventure with me. I love sending these art-filled emails to your inbox everyday, and I’m so excited to see where year number two will take us! Speaking of which…
For subscribing members who’ve signed up for the 1-on-1 CHAT with me, stay tuned! I got hundreds of responses, so I’m sorting through the emails and will make a plan asap (I feel like we should start a few little groups, maybe? There were definitely three or four themes that emerged). Anywho, more info coming soon.
Have a lovely, creative weekend ~ Danielle
ART FOR YOUR EAR update … after an accidental podcast hiatus due to a terrible flu, way too many deadlines, and being totally overwhelmed by the news, I will be back with a brand new episode next weekend!
