First, these are oil paintings. Whaaaat? Second, the idea behind this series is so interesting. This is the latest series by Scottish painter Alison Watt, and this is what it’s all about:
“‘A Portrait Without Likeness’ [July ‘21 - Jan ‘22] explores the artist’s continuing fascination with [Allan] Ramsay’s portraits. Watt, most known for her beautiful and intricate large-scale paintings of drapery and folds, has long been an admirer of Ramsay’s portraits of women, in particular the intensely personal images of his first and second wives, Anne Bayne and Margaret Lindsay of Evelick [shown above]. Both portraits reside in the Gallery's collection and [were] shown alongside Watt’s new work.” ~ National Galleries Scotland
Such a beautiful, unique homage. To learn more, watch this “in conversation” video with Alison.

So, while spending hours falling down the ‘Alison Watt’ rabbit hole, I found these dreamy photos of her light-filled studio! My favorite part (besides the huge windows, gorgeous floors and general loveliness)… is that great big angel!
“Studio. Guardian. Found in an architectural salvage yard over 25 years ago, at almost 7 ft tall, so heavy she has to be on a supporting beam or else she’d fall through the floor. She’s come with me to each of the studios I’ve worked in. She’s seen it all.”
Well, I could not love that more. Follow Alison on Instagram at @alison_watt_.
