Episode no. 200 of ART FOR YOUR EAR… what?! Yep, true story. I wanted to do something different for this momentous occasion, but what? I asked on Instagram, and a whole bunch of you said, ‘have someone interview YOU’. That felt weird… until I thought of the perfect someone! The wonderful, insightful, and brilliant sculptor Petah Coyne is asking the questions today! And her first question: “Were you an artsy kid?” Ha! Clearly, Petah knows the drill. Spoiler alert: My answer was YES. That oil pastel bird up there was the first masterpiece my parents ever framed… um, can you blame them?! Look/listen to our conversation on my site, or subscribe on Apple Podcasts and/or Spotify.
… and, to keep the bird theme going:
Ooooh! Thread, paper, paint, and sometimes even real feathers. This is the dreamy mixed media work of Nova Scotia based artist, and NSTATMA member, Katrina MacFarlane. Here’s a description of why she does what she does:
Each feather, seedpod, felt shape or stitch of thread becomes a cell of something greater, a building block in the construction of a form that grows over time. Much like mending, the tying of thread creates something solid, something strong and regenerative — a hope. Her creative process is slow and methodical, requiring patience and attention to detail, but what unfolds is a body of work that draws us closer because we can feel the passage of time. At its essence, MacFarlane’s work is an exercise in how to assemble our own resilience. Currently, MacFarlane is making work that comments on the environmental realities that threaten bird populations.
