Blue cyanotypes, painted cyanotypes, installations AND a new book!? Okay, we may need more than one spotlight today. All of this is the work of Poughkeepsie, NY based artist Julia Whitney Barnes. I found this poetic quote from a show did earlier this year:
“I am most interested in creating objects that feel both beautiful and mysterious. I want each painting to be familiar, yet slightly outside of time. These works symbolize resilience and the process speaks to a kind of gutting and reconstituting. There’s an object, then a ghost of the object, and then the reassertion of the object. The final work isn’t the actual flora and fauna, but instead, a record of my will to bring them back.”
Beautiful. Speaking of beauty, Julia has a brand new, art-filled book titled “Planting Utopia” that is ready for pre-order! Find Julia’s available work on her site, and follow her on Instagram at @juliawhitneybarnes.
Soo Visual Arts Center (Soo VAC) in Minneapolis just launched an OPEN CALL FOR ART for their annual “Untitled” show, and for this 18th installment they’ve asked me to be the juror! Here’s a bit of info:
“We're looking for artists working in any medium at any career stage [in the USA and Canada]. We understand the application fee ($25) may be a barrier for some, please email untitled@soovac.org with the subject "Fee Waiver" and your favorite emoji, and we'll be in touch!”
You can find all of the nitty gritty / APPLY right here, and they’re on Instagram at @soovac. {Building photos by Teagan White}
Have a lovely weekend ~ Danielle
It's amazing how they look as murals and installations, so beautiful!
Beautiful and delicate work by Julia! Her work honors the transparency, movement and individuality yet collectiveness of her journey. ❤️
