Sewing machines and power tools? HELL YES! Today’s spotlight is shining on Canadian artist, and athlete, Mallory Tolcher. As a former basketball player myself (ok, my hoop dreams didn’t make it past my senior year in high school, but still!), I absolutely love everything about this ongoing project:
[This work] explores the beauty of basketball, its balance of power and grace, and its artful improvisation within immutable structure … In order to challenge stereotypes of masculinity and aggression within basketball, the nets use materials that are hard and soft, masculine and feminine, and organic and man-made.
Beautiful! Mallory’s hoops ‘n jerseys are part of an upcoming group exhibition, titled “GAME/CULTURE”, at The Reach Gallery Museum in Abbotsford, BC from May 27th until September 3rd. Check it out if you’re in the area, and be sure to follow Mallory on Instagram at @methenorth.
Have a lovely weekend ~ Danielle
Mallory Tolcher's "basketball art" instantly put a smile on my face. I started to think about why it made me happy and then decided there was no need to analyze it on a lovely Saturday morning. It's light and uplifting and can just be enjoyed for the happiness it provides. Thank you for the gift, Danielle. : )
