Wood. Somehow she does all of this with wood!? These sculptures are the work of Boston based artist Alison Croney Moses, and this is part of her story:
“Trained as a furniture maker, my sculptures use a combination of timeless woodworking techniques, such as coopering and bent lamination, to create delicate, intricate shapes with a subtle nod to the female form. My inspiration sometimes comes from the materials and processes themselves, capturing universal forms and impressions from nature and the human body. Other times, it come from photos, gatherings, and memories that serve as an impetus for my explorations of Black motherhood, where I examine my experiences of childhood and motherhood, reframing my memories for my children and my own healing.”
Wow. So beautiful, so powerful. Speaking of which, the final piece above is a brand new public installation , titled "This Moment for Joy", that Alison created for the Boston Public Art Triennial. It’s located at Lot Lab, Charlestown Navy Yard, One 5th St. Alison is on Instagram at @alisoncroney, and while you’re there, here’s a little video that walks around one of these exquisite pieces, so you can get a better look.
Beautiful words by a talented artist. Okay, over to you… take these words by American photographer Diane Arbus as your starting place, and turn them into something visual in any medium you choose. Have fun, you can’t do it wrong.
