These plates, from an ongoing series titled “Private Collection”, are the work of today’s member in the spotlight, Philadelphia based artist Elizabeth Hamilton. Oh, wait, did I mention that THEY ARE PAPER PLATES!?
“After I had my first child I knew my art practice would take a hit. I had to relocate my studio, and there wasn’t time, energy or money to keep working the way I had. And maybe the biggest hurdle was being mentally depleted. The road back to art was super bumpy, and then we had our second child, and then COVID eliminated childcare… I had to be able to work in short intervals, it had to be ultra cheap, I couldn’t spend time setting up and cleaning up because some days I could only get 10 minutes at a time. This series is what kept me thinking art making was going to be possible. Watercolors were so accommodating … I could make slow but steady progress. And, these take up practically no space. “Private Collection” is the collection of plates I envisioned my grandmother would have owned if her circumstances had been different. They’re all sourced from plates and platters in the European Decorative Arts Dept at the @philamuseum, where I worked for several years.”
Brilliant, right!? You can follow Elizabeth on Instagram at @elizabethmhamiltonart.
Tomorrow’s the day! I’ll be at SFMoMA (pinch me!) SUNDAY JUNE 11th from 11:30am until 4pm doing readings, signings AND recording kids in attendance for a new podcast episode! I can’t wait to ask them their thoughts on “being an artist”, what their inner critics, aka ‘art bullies’ say to them, and whatever else they wanna tell me! I’m predicting hilarity and inspiration. I’ve attached the schedule here, so you’ll know exactly where to be and when :) Hope to see some of you there! (Wow. That was a lot of exclamation marks.)
Have a great weekend ~ Danielle
In one of your older podcasts is this, i quote: “money or moma? Moma!” Its a running gag in our artcommunity. And now you are in moma!!! Enjoy!
Something about this absolutely delicate and beautiful paintwork on paper plates is really irresistible. The paper plates make it somehow utterly incredible. Wow, good for her!
