In my beginners ceramics class, I’ve now made three wobbly bowls and two weird mugs… but, whoa, I wish I knew how to do THIS! These imaginary organism-looking pieces are the work of Canadian artist Toni Losey:
“… The repetition found on the wheel influences her work as Losey intuitively builds sculptural forms mirroring the patterns of growth in nature. These works evolve within a set of rules developed from her personal interpretation of the natural world.
As she attempts to marry technical process with conceptual prowess, the work that emerges seems to exist outside of the maker, something otherworldly but organic, familiar but new. Losey’s work captures natural progressions found in nature and aims to renew our connection to the planet.” ~ J. Lohmann Gallery, NY
Beautiful. You can follow Toni on Instagram at @tonilosey.
Oooh, less than two weeks till I get to wander around inside the American Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. New York based artist Simone Leigh has taken over the space this year, filling it with her glorious sculptural work in an exhibition titled “Sovereignty”. I’ll report back, but until then, I thought I’d give you a peek into her Brooklyn studio. The space, the light, those windows, and don’t even get me started on that huge clay head! STUN. NING.
Happy Tuesday ~ Danielle
I saw a couple pieces of her work in New York and they are stunning. Have so much fun in that fabulous city.
