Apparently yesterday was WORLD EMBROIDERY DAY… which sounds like a perfect excuse to show you the latest work by California based, Dutch artist Natalie Ciccoricco. What started as a small project in the first few months of quarantine, has grown into a huge, absolutely gorgeous ongoing series. “Nesting” combines Natalie’s already established EMBROIDERY practice, with objects she finds out in the WORLD. See what I did there? Full circle. Keep an eye on this ever-evolving project by following Natalie on Instagram at @mrsciccoricco.
Birds flying in dreamy abstract skies. Today’s ‘Society Member in the Spotlight’ is Boston based artist Megan Carty. I’ve been noticing her little birds on Instagram for awhile, and I just had to ask… what are the crowns about? A nod to Basquiat, perhaps? And so, instead of assuming, I just sent her a quick message. Here is Megan’s lovely answer:
“… they are a nod to the halo in religious paintings of yore. My thought is we are all perfectly made no matter what we were told or what we believe about ourselves. The birds are unique and special and busy being awesome… not worried what others think. The crown symbol hovering above, like a halo, shows we are all special, powerful, chosen and strong. (I felt an actual halo was too much of a specific religious symbol, but the crown symbol felt more fitting.)”
Ah, and just like that, all of my questions are answered! Thank goodness for DMs. Follow Megan on Instagram at @megan_carty_art and check out her shop for both originals and prints.
So I googled, “What costs $36?”. Turns out you can get one sheet of plywood for that price… but allow me to make another suggestion. How about AN ENTIRE YEAR OF DAILY ART DELIVERIES for $36!? You can’t get splinters from art features, jump-starter projects, upcoming shows, artsy movies, or peeks into artists’ studios. Just sayin’.
Have a lovely weekend, and I’ll meet you back at your inbox on Monday. ~ Danielle
