“Shining Despite the Sh*t”, and “It's Okay to Be Happy” … yes and YES! These super sweet, large-scale oil paintings are the latest work by San Francisco based artist Ingrid V. Wells (um, also, those glasses are fantastic!) Okay, I’ll hand it over to Ingrid to explain what’s going on with these pink sprinkles and lemon-flavored stars:
“With this growing body of work, I'm working towards my solo exhibition at Voss Gallery in San Francisco. I'm working loosely with the psychological idea of "glimmers." Glimmers are things that we interact with that emit a positive and calming energy. They make us feel safe, connected, and are the opposite of triggers. I'm working with monochromatic colors and repeated simple shapes to create a visual rhythm … This work is made as a direct response to the pandemic and lockdowns in an attempt to calm and a positive mindset to viewers.”
I will happily take a pile of candy to help me deal with this pandemic! You can follow Ingrid on Instagram at @ingridvwells, and keep an eye out for details on her solo show opening on September 25th at Voss Gallery.
You’ve probably heard about this, but it’s definitely some big art news from the past week! A few days ago, a typhoon in Naoshima Japan washed Yayoi Kusama‘s pumpkin from its perch on the pier (where it’s been sitting since 1994), into the sea. Apparently it’s been saved, and staff at the Benesse Art Site are working with Kusama’s studio to see what can be done. I posted a video to Instagram showing the pumpkin being tossed around in the waves, and so many people commented that it looked like an entirely new art piece! Installation meets performance, pumpkin becomes sea creature. I am so curious to know what Yayoi thinks… I kinda hope she loved seeing it in action!
Happy weekend ~ Danielle
I love the pumpkin on the beach but am especially fond of the kinetic, surfing version!
Love those pink sprinkles
