Whoa… so good. These oil paintings (on canvas) are all from an upcoming exhibition, titled “Woman’s Work”, by Canadian artist Kirsty Templeton Davidge at Peter Robertson Gallery in Edmonton, AB. Here’s Kirsty’s lovely and thoughtful artist statement:
As a woman, the way I behave and express myself is shaped by the cultures I was brought up in. Gender roles, characteristics and activities are not innate, but are socially constructed. Further, my gender roles morph, contract and expand in time with the passing years and responsibilities. I find myself trying to deny my aging but also wanting to reconcile and make peace with the inevitable changes to my constructed female role. This series of paintings contemplates these transitions and examines ideas around femininity, beauty, gender, age and intimacy. My work begins with second hand clothes; I search for garments that offer a history or a counterpoint and my models are the women in my life. I am using myself as a model more and more but with all these women, I am seeking overlooked details and intimacies that are only revealed through long and careful observation. My paintings are quiet and my palette subdued, in an effort to open an honest dialogue - hopefully with my viewer but ultimately with myself.
Beautiful. The show opens on SEPT 15th and runs until OCT 1, 2022. You can follow Kirsty on Instagram at @kirstytd_studio.
Well, I just had the most inspiring weekend at TEDx Nashville. There were so many good talks that I could’ve pulled a motivating quote from every single one. That said, I really loved this thought from American comedian Drew Lynch. He was talking about adversity and how he was so driven with a certain goal, that when he hit “road blocks” or “detours”, he didn’t realize (until hindsight kicked in) that the path the universe had in mind for him was actually better than the plan he was forcing. Anyway, something interesting to think about if you’re feeling like things aren’t going the way you’d hoped… because maybe they’re going somewhere even better! xo
Happy Monday ~ Danielle
ps. Hello FREE subscribers… if you’re wondering why you’re getting a Monday email, it’s because I was too freaked out about speaking at TEDxNashville on Saturday morning to send out the newsletter! Anyway, please enjoy Monday’s art instead.
Is it possible to listen to your Ted talk? Congratulations again!
These are soooogood! Thank you for sharing!
