art delivery : 09.02.23
Today’s spotlight is, once again, on New York based artist Petah Coyne. She’s been on FIRE the past couple of years, exhibiting everywhere from Turkey to Taipei! I was lucky enough to see her work at PAFA Museum in Philadelphia (the peacock tree above, titled “Untitled #1383 (Sisters—Two Trees),”) :
“Made from two separate apple trees and dotted with white and Silver Pied peacocks, “Untitled #1383 (Sisters—Two Trees),” 2013-2023, is located on PAFA’s gallery level. Stained blue-black and decorated with clusters of blood red flowers, the tree at the center of this installation is representative of the baby boomer generation, who, in their youth, fought courageously for social change and readily aided their neighbors. The somber color palette is symbolic of the uncertainties faced by contemporary America.”
I sat in that space for hours, taking in every tiny detail that went into this sculpture that was over 10 years in the making (here’s my video of the experience). If you’re in Philly, you can see this work until October 6th. Oh, and be sure to climb the makeshift staircase to see “Untitled #1551 (Color of Heaven)… it’s GORGEOUS (here’s my video of that). You can find Petah on Instagram at @petahcoyne.
