These exquisite oil paintings (what!? yep!) are the work of today’s society member in the spotlight, California based artist Leslie Lewis Sigler. Here’s a poetic excerpt from Leslie’s artist statement:
“In my work I explore family objects as “families” of objects—individual silver heirlooms that are related to one another in a single collection and, collectively, to the individual families that put them into domestic practice and social circulation. I’m interested in the histories and lifespans of these objects, their ability to reflect our own personal life stories and family histories, and the way they continue to connect us to one another in time and space.”
There’s a lovely five minute video that gives a closer look at Leslie’s work, studio etc. Watch it right here, and follow her on Instagram at @leslielewissigler_paints.
I rarely share my own work here, but since this show is currently hanging in Nashville, I thought I would! “The Size of a Grapefruit” is on now until September 24th at Modfellows Gallery. Here’s the artist statement:
One in three women will be told her pain is caused by “a large orange, a small melon, several cherries, a few plums, a medium sized grapefruit, etc”. Strange but true, doctors often use fruit sizes to describe the tumors they find growing in our abdomens. Well, if my produce-filled diagnosis was supposed to help me visualize my uterus as a lovely summer fruit basket, it didn’t work. An old ashtray filled with muck felt much closer to the truth. That attitude, however, was not helping the situation.
This ongoing series, including both sculptures and collages, is an attempt to transform ugliness and pain, into something elegant and precious — rewriting the narrative from bad to good, transforming trash into treasure, and realizing that broken can be beautiful.
If you’d like to see all of the work, you can find it right here.
Have a lovely, creative weekend ~ Danielle
