Oil paintings? Yep! This is the exquisite work of Manchester based British artist Louise Giovanelli:
“In her paintings Louise Giovanelli explores the tension between representation and materiality, figuration and abstraction, and how the mechanics of picture making shape our act of looking. Relating the contemporary to the historic, and the sacred to the profane, Giovanelli considers the significance and history of painting as a system of representation, exposing how the materiality of paint can carry and convey meaning.” ~ White Cube Gallery
The “act of looking”… I wish I could look at these in person allllll daaaaay looooong. Follow Louise on Instagram at @louise___giovanelli.
ps. Notice that most of her paintings are on multiple panels… like yesterday’s ‘go big’ TIP.
I have a major crushes on surrealist artists Leonora Carrington and Leonor Fini. They were a huge source of discussion at the Venice Biennale this year, and now I wanna be a witch when I grow up! Both of them were fascinated by alchemy, witchcraft, and the power of women… so I thought they’d make perfect subjects for the ‘jumpday’ right before Halloween, yes? Yes! Choose one (or all) of these shots by French photographer Denise Colomb, print it out, and then alter it by adding your magic… whether your wand looks like a paintbrush or a glitter pen. Have fun, you can’t do it wrong!
Happy Jumpday ~ Danielle
ps. Subscribing members have access to ALL of the jump day prompts dating back to January 2021… that’s a whole lot of jumping!
She’s fabulous, she has a episode on Talk Art and recently on Great women artists. I really liked how she spoke about her work.
