This is “Childhood Memories” (2017) by Barcelona born, Chicago based artist Selva Aparicio. Here’s her description from an interview with My Modern Met:
“Rugs are typically adorned with sacred gardens and oases, and can be moved around the home. This rug stayed put, quietly participating in years of familial abuse. This installation is about covering and exposing, trauma, and bearing witness. My memories are permanently etched, so the soft fabric is represented in hand-carved scars on discarded wood flooring.”
Brilliant, beautiful, absolutely heartbreaking. You can find so much more amazing work by Selva on her site, and follow her on Instagram at @selvaaparicio.
Okay, we have to do this! Dr. Jessica Wade, a London-based physicist, wrote 1600 (!!!) Wikipedia biographies for unrecognized female scientists…. sooooo, I’m sending out this challenge to everyone today, because on Saturdays this newsletter reaches almost 20,000 of you. If we each write one — just one — Wikipedia biography on our favorite female artist… WOW 20,000 new entries documenting women, past and present, who deserve recognition! Now that would be something. Just go to Wikipedia and use the search field at the top of the page to look for the artist you want to write about. If they don’t have a bio already, you’ll be asked if you want to “create a draft and submit it for review”… click on that!

This is so fun! I started searching just a bit on Wikipedia. The first artist I thought of was Nancy Blum and found no entry so I thought I’d start a list. I searched a few more like Jane Hammond whose work you shared recently and was one of my college instructors. She’s got a beautiful bio! Then I thought to search for your name. Nothing yet! I’d love to write one for you Danielle! Can we collaborate? Maybe I can interview you or just send you a list of questions? What would you most like it to say about you?♥️
The hand carved rugs are very original, and very moving!
Dr. Jessica weed makes me very happy that I just made a donation to Wikipedia
