Today’s ‘member spotlight’ is shining on the “ceramic quilts” of Tennessee based Andrea Larsen. She’s a Mexican American ceramic artist who uses abstract design and quilt patterns as her visual language:
In her work, Andrea strives to make connections between things that struggle to connect. Such as within herself (the Mexican and American sides of her heritage) and the world at large (the polarization of humanity who in reality, need each other to thrive.)
So beautiful. Also beautiful, this 3 minute video on Andrea’s homepage which gives the most poetic insight into why she does what she does. You can find her on Instagram at @andrealarsenart.
Did ya know… when my book, “Your Inner Critic Is A Big Jerk”, was released way back in 2016, I also got to record an audio version? I did. It was so much fun, but wow, reading a whole book in one shot requires a lot of lemon tea! You can check it out right here. Oh, and it was also translated into Spanish… the book, not the audio version! I would have needed waaaaay more than lemon tea to pull that off! {ps. I was so happy that I managed to get Philly based artist, and my dear friend, Martha Rich to illustrate this book.}
Wow that video on her website is soo good, what an inspiration!
Danielle, I love your critiques. They give me a whole new perspective of what is being created in the art world. As a teen, I learned how to quilt and created 3 beautiful quilts. When I went to college and started painting, it gave me all the knowledge to create the paintings that I created from that time on. Shapes, textures, lines, patterns all become a part of my painting language to this day. I want to commend you on demonstrating how the way that women created years ago in fabric is being used to extend their creations in other media today. The ceramic quilts are so clever and stunning. Once I started painting, I stopped quilting but it became a part of my journey as a visual artist as well as other female artists. Thank you for bringing this history forward in your posts.
