I have loooooved the work of American collage artist Leigh Wells since forever. In fact, she was one of the first artists I ever wrote about, way back in 2009… and again in 2013! These images are all from Leigh’s series, titled “Visage”. Here’s a snippet from her artist statement:
“I create paper collage and paintings on pieced textiles that consist of simple, restrained abstract forms evocative of deeply sensed mental and emotional states. I approach the combination of elements in my work as though I am constructing a feeling, a thought, a relationship; intentionally creating spatial and narrative ambiguity that heightens the work’s expressive tension. The repurposed materials that I use have their own histories which become integral expressive elements in the work.”
Sigh. Yes, exactly. Some of her work can be found as prints (even REALLY BIG ONES!) through Tappan Collective, and you can follow Leigh on Instagram at @leighwellss.
Well this seems like a perfect opportunity to give you a peek into Leigh’s new-to-her studio! She recently moved all of her bits of wonderful paper, fabrics, paints etc to ICB Art Studios in Sausalito, California. Aaaaaaand, she’ll be opening her studio (#345a) on Dec 7-8, 11am-5pm (& by appt), so drop in if you happen to be in the area.
Ahhhh, one of my SF besties! And the woman who encouraged me to quit advertising and blog full time! She’s an amazing talent and a very wonderful human, too!
Beautiful, inspiring work 🤍
