Oh. My. Goodness. These surreal oil paintings are the work of Australian artist Rebecca Hastings… clearly we needed closeups to make sure they were actually paintings?!? And my favorite bit? The random hands. Weird. Wonderful. Here’s part of Rebecca’s bio / artist statement:
Rebecca Hastings' practice engages with themes of the Posthuman condition, reflecting and drawing on both personal and collective existential anxieties. Adopting the conventions of figurative and still life painting genres, uncanny and gothic tropes interact with the everyday to convey otherworldly, surreal narratives. These embodiments of unease acknowledge the inexpressible, playing out as memento mori for our home, our innocence, and our humanity.
Otherworldly narratives… LOVE. You can find Rebecca’s work through Flinders Lane Gallery (Melbourne), and she’s on Instagram at @rebeccahastingsartist.
Okay, this is pure thrift shop gold. My good friend (and amazing artist based in Oregon) Alexis Mixter texted this photo to me from her local thrift shop… aaaand I knew I had today’s jumpstart! What is happening here? Are these two friends? Strangers? What on earth do they talk about up on that shelf? OR a bigger question, who took this duo home!? (spoiler : Alexis left them there for someone else’s enjoyment). For today’s prompt, you can write a short story or poem that explains the relationship between this strange couple, OR you could make a painting, drawing, collage of the person who might buy them as a set!? Have fun, you can’t do it wrong!
ps. This is such a fun thing to do while thrifting… keep an eye on the displays, and take photos of strange shelf-mates, because the creative possibilities are endless!
Happy Jumpday ~ Danielle
Intriguing paintings!! And love the Jumstart idea. 😀
