Ooooh, today’s society spotlight is shining directly on the colorful, woven portraits of American artist Melissa English Campbell:
“I investigate ways to capture presence and absence in collaboration by both building up structural patterning through weaving and introducing disruptions through painting. To this end I treat unbound yarns as a canvas, while simultaneously planning for their use as orderly warps on the loom. This creates a situation in which chance and order can make their marks in collaboration. By using a double weave, two separate layers of paintings weave together into one composition. Weaving the two layers hides and reveals them in a rhythmic pattern while the painted yarns, in turn, disrupt and enhance the visibility of the patterning depending on how I align the layers.”
Whoa. Annnnd, now I want a giant loom. You can follow Melissa on Instagram at @me_campbell.
Well, it was an honor being nominated... and it was even more exciting to WIN! What!? Yep! Thank you so, so, so much to everyone who voted for HOW TO SPOT AN ARTIST in the 2021 #KidsBookChoiceAwards 🌈 As you can see, all of us are thrilled! HOORAY! YIPEE!
Today is this lady’s birthday… HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM! I happen to know she’s a member of ‘The NO SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH ART Society’ (because she’s a good mama), so I wanted to give her a little shout out! She was the first artist I ever wanted to be like (and I’ve been stealing her art supplies since I was old enough to reach them). I was so thrilled to have her on my podcast last spring… you can listen right here. I love this episode, and I love my creative, generous, kind and loving mom! xo
Have a cozy weekend. I’m gonna go call the birthday girl. ~ Danielle
WOW! To all this!
YOU WON!!! And that stupid teacher way back when doubted you...what a fool he was! A great big congratulations to you and a happy birthday to your Mom! xo
