Hello my fellow art lovers! Welcome to the very first daily newsletter from ‘The NO SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH ART Society’! I’m thrilled to be in your inbox… it’s so much more efficient than making you visit the blog… and Instagram, and Twitter, and Facebook! You have enough on your plate, so I’m more than happy to deliver a fresh batch of art to you each day {and as soon as technology catches up, I’ll send you a morning coffee too!}. And so, without further ado, issue no.1 :
Loooove! These banners {fabric and stitched thread} are the work of California based artist Christopher Martin. All of these pieces are part of his current solo show at Hashimoto Contemporary SF {804 Sutter Street}, titled ‘Homeward Bound’. It’s a “mixed media collection of paintings and banners highlighting the duality of the African Diaspora and its hidden connection to American traditional sailor tattoos.” Here’s a description of his work via the gallery’s site:
Through his art, Martin tells the story of a young man coming from the South. While attending school at North Carolina A&T for graphic design, Martin was prone to create hand cut and sewn banners with logo-like images to tell a story relevant to his own culture and history. With cotton representing the toil/labor of those captured in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, Martin hand-cuts and sews tapestry pieces that are representative of the modern-day experience of the African diaspora.
Brilliant and beautiful. ‘Homeward Bound’ runs until March 27th, 2021.

WHY NOT, indeed! Ah, there are so many things I love about this beauty. First, it’s a beaded badge!!! {… which reminds me, I’m totally going to make some new scout badges for our society}. Secondly, it’s the work of Toronto artist/designer Amanda Happe. Her interview in my first book, “Creative Block”, produced one of my favorite, go-to, super inspiring quotes. Ready? Here’s your MONDAY MOTIVATION:
DK: How do you handle criticism?
AH: It’s one of the most beautiful things about doing this - you don’t have to care. No one can wrestle the pencil out of your hand. You get to keep going in absolute defiance.
Hell yes, and a big beaded WHY NOT, too! Have a fabulous day, pick up your pencil, and I’ll be back tomorrow with more art.
