Ahhhh, the work of New York based artist Johanna Goodman {yes, that’s Johanna in collage form right up there}. I’ve written about her “Imaginary Beings” before, and you better believe I’ll do it again! These statuesque figures are organized into all sorts of categories, from nature and cities, to animals and textiles. I’m a bit of a sucker for the Landscape Imaginary Beings, myself. Check out her “Catalogue of Imaginary Beings” if you’d like to add one of these beauties to your collection.
It’s the society’s first official JUMP DAY {formerly known as Wednesday, aka HUMP DAY}. Every Wednesday I’ll be sending out a creative jump-starter project to keep you moving and making. This is one of my faves! NYC artist Trey Speegle gave me this one for his interview in ‘Creative Block’. Here’s what you do:
Make a drawing or find a black & white image you like. The one I used above is from an old Vogue magazine, and I LOVE it. Photocopy the drawing/image 50 times on cardstock (or enough copies so that you won't worry about how many you've used.) Next, set a timer* for no more than ONE HOUR, and start altering the image in as many different ways as you can think of with colored pencils, paint, scissors, tape, whatever. The important thing is to turn off your brain, play with a repeated form, and have fun without worrying about the outcome! These won’t be masterpieces, but there could be an accidental gem in there that leads to something new.
*I always set a timer when doing unblocking exercises. It stops you from second guessing and fiddling around with details… you just have to GO, GO, GO!
Have fun! ~ Danielle
