Whoa. These lovely acrylic paintings are all from a series titled “Shrouds” by today’s member in the spotlight, Vancouver based artist Jana Rayne MacDonald:

In this series, Jana ventures further into the language of cloth, through the critical element of the obscured body.  Here, surface and substance collide while communicating the ‘social self’ of both viewer and objective self. What is not shown is most important. This self is left fully to the interpretation of the viewer.  The work elicits often contradictory and confused emotions based on personal, cultural and political memories, allowances and fears; often misunderstood and possibly even unjustified.  Hence, the beauty of the work can be simultaneously uncomfortable.

Indeed. You can find Jana on Instagram at @janaraynemac.

I put up a mini-podcast episode! I’m dipping my toe into video, so I just did a little one to get me started (and it wasn’t as hard as I thought!). A few people have suggested a ‘whatcha working on’ episode, so this is a 20 minute catch-up on the artwork I’ve been doing lately. Up next, the first ‘Crits ‘n Coffee’ session featuring the work and questions from subscribing members of this lovely society of brilliant artists… stay tuned!

Have a lovely weekend ~ Danielle

Love the paintings by Jana Rayne MacDonald - they are indeed haunting signifiers.

Also, really enjoyed your YouTube vid of 1st episode of “crits and coffee”. So, if I am not mistaken you like dark roast? Me too. Although I am too old to drink quite as much as you seem to …. Anywho … stay local. Contact Rocky Mountain Coffee Company - tell them if they don’t sponsor you, we will “Kick (their) Ass” !! LOL!

And I look forward to next episode where I am hoping to see all those witchy pieces coalescing!
