Embroidery? Nope. Today’s member in the spotlight is a wrapper. This is the work of Seattle based artist Amanda McLaurin:
After a successful career as an event planner in Raleigh and Seattle, Amanda relocated to Semarang, Indonesia in 2015. While living there she spent every available weekend exploring villages specializing in traditional Indonesian textiles including batik, ikat and lurik. She returned to Washington eager to build her art practice and began teaching fiber workshops. With a desire to create pieces that were both fiber based and sculptural, she began wrapping wooden panels with wool and mercerized cotton.
See… wrapping! And, ooooh, does it ever look fantastic in the wild. Those two large navy blue pieces at The Forum Hotel in Charlottesville? Love! You can drop Amanda a message if you’d like to commission her, and you’ll find her on Instagram at @amanda_mclaurin_.
You guys, I was invited to be a guest on my favorite podcast! I’ve been listening to “Attitudes!” with comedians/writers Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi for years, so when they asked me to come on their show… um, I SAID YES! We talked about about art, misogyny, Bryan’s “hairy styles”, aaaaand I also made a pretty big announcement about where all of my recent clay pieces are going (it rhymes with Riami!). You can download the episode wherever you get your podcasts.
Happy weekend ~ Danielle
