The light! The palettes! The insane amount of detail! This is the gorgeous work (acrylic on canvas) of Canadian painter Sean William Randall. His latest solo show, titled “BECALMED”, opens this weekend at Ian Tan Gallery in Vancouver BC. Scout Magazine just interviewed him about the show, and I love this exchange:

Scout Mag: Art is a visual experience, but I’d like to challenge you to describe yours using the less obvious senses: sound, taste, smell and feeling.

Sean: The smell of rain evaporating off of soil and leaves on a warm day, with the gentle sound of a slow stream nearby.

Yep, nailed it. The show opens this Saturday, September 9th, and runs until September 30th. You can find Sean on Instagram at @seanwilliamrandall.

Yet another great question sent in by a member of this fantastic community:

Dear Arty,  Do you really need to choose to be either a commercial or museum artist? Is there a way to be both? I’m often torn between these worlds where I have projects that suit public art galleries, but then I love selling my work and seeing my collector list grow. Thanks ~ Camille

Have a great day ~ Danielle

Yes, you can be commercial and a fine artist at the same time. I was an illustrator in national magazines, etc. and a fine art painter with my paintings in juried exhibitions at the same time.

Hi Camille! Be both—reinvent yourself as much as you’d like. Plus the more collectors you have increases your standing. I hate saying “value” because all creative expressions have value. Think of artists like Warhol, Kahlo, O’Keefe etc. They grace the walls of museums but also are printed on coffee cups, calendars and carry bags.

I always advise my artists (as a curator) to clearly define your work on your website or Instagram descriptions. Describe your series and their meanings and keep them on separate pages.

With your more commercial work, you could consider licensing it. Make even more $$. ☺️

Good luck!
