Yes, you can be commercial and a fine artist at the same time. I was an illustrator in national magazines, etc. and a fine art painter with my paintings in juried exhibitions at the same time.

Hi Camille! Be both—reinvent yourself as much as you’d like. Plus the more collectors you have increases your standing. I hate saying “value” because all creative expressions have value. Think of artists like Warhol, Kahlo, O’Keefe etc. They grace the walls of museums but also are printed on coffee cups, calendars and carry bags.

I always advise my artists (as a curator) to clearly define your work on your website or Instagram descriptions. Describe your series and their meanings and keep them on separate pages.

With your more commercial work, you could consider licensing it. Make even more $$. ☺️

Good luck!

Gorgeous and vibrant. Just want to sit inside the visual.

For me I learn sometimes when going to museums if someone is narrating about the art. I find it really interesting. Maybe it’s more intellectual? More expressive and the artist is not at all concerned how it will be perceived. Personally I feel painting for myself is most important.
